چکیده

Abstract Conventional soundings are rather limited over the western North Pacific and can be largely compensated by GNSS radio occultation (RO) data. We utilize GSI hybrid assimilation system to assimilate RO data multi-resolution global model (MPAS) investigate impact on prediction of Typhoon Nepartak that passed southern Taiwan in 2016. In this study, performances with local refractivity bending angle operators compared for analysis typhoon forecast. Assimilations both have shown similar comparable temperature moisture increments after cycling reduce RMSEs forecast without at later times. The results 60-15-km resolution show improves track assimilation, has better than refractivity, particular wind improvement forecasted is mainly due improved simulation translation typhoon. Diagnostics wavenumber-one potential vorticity (PV) tendency budget indicates northwestward dominated PV horizontal advection slowed down southward induced stronger differential diabatic heating south center bending-angle assimilation. Simulations enhanced 3 km region storm further improvements intensity Positive impacts also illustrated other two typhoons using MPAS-GSI system.

Assimilation of GPS RO data using a nonlocal excess phase operator and its impact on typhoon prediction

Many previous studies have demonstrated that GPS radio occultation (RO) data have positive impacts on global operational numerical weather prediction as well as the forecasting of severe weather events such as atmospheric rivers and hurricanes. The assimilation of GPS RO data can be performed with different observation operators, including: local refractivity, local bending angle, nonlocal exce...
